iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: Specs, Upgrades & India Price

Apple officially announced the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, 2026, so this comparison no longer needs to rely on pre-launch rumours. The new model keeps the familiar 6.3-inch Pro form factor while concentrating its upgrades on performance, camera control, battery endurance, connectivity and Apple Intelligence.

For Indian buyers, pre-orders begin on September 12 and availability starts September 18. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 for 256GB.

Both phones use a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with 2622x1206 resolution at 460 ppi, Always-On display and ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple also lists the same 3000-nit peak outdoor brightness. The iPhone 18 Pro therefore focuses less on changing the basic display specification and more on the redesigned, smaller Dynamic Island and internal efficiency improvements.

The larger hardware change is inside. iPhone 18 Pro moves from A19 Pro to the 2nm A20 Pro, with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the redesigned thermal system and A20 Pro can deliver up to 40% higher sustained performance than the previous generation.

The Flipkart listing supplied for the Burgundy 256GB iPhone 18 Pro identifies model number MJRR4HN/A and lists a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with 2622 x 1206 resolution, A20 Pro six-core processor, 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, 256GB internal storage and iOS 27.

The same retailer listing describes a triple 48MP rear camera setup with a variable-aperture Fusion Main camera, 48MP Ultra Wide and 48MP Telephoto, plus an 18MP Center Stage front camera. It also lists 5G, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, USB tethering, TV out, built-in stereo speakers and Dolby speaker support.

Flipkart lists the handset at 150 mm height and 212 g for this variant. Because the supplied listing text ends at 'GPS Supp', any fields after that point are intentionally left unfilled rather than inferred.

The iPhone 17 Pro already has a versatile 48MP Pro Fusion system with 48MP Main, 48MP Ultra Wide and 48MP Telephoto cameras. The iPhone 18 Pro retains the three-48MP approach but significantly changes the Main camera by introducing variable aperture.

The iPhone 18 Pro Main camera can operate at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. Apple also adds Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance, along with a histogram. This gives photographers more direct control over exposure, motion and depth of field than the fixed f/1.78 Main camera on iPhone 17 Pro.

A20 Pro is built using a 2nm process and combines a 6-core CPU with a new 7-core GPU. Apple says the GPU can be up to 40% faster than A19 Pro, while memory bandwidth increases by 50%. The chip also uses a Dual 16-core Neural Engine for 32 total cores.

The iPhone 18 Pro launches with iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. For buyers who keep a phone for several years, the newer chip and expanded AI hardware are among the strongest reasons to choose the newer generation.

Battery life is another meaningful generation-over-generation change. Apple rates the iPhone 17 Pro for up to 31 hours of video playback. For eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple lists up to 36 hours, an increase of up to five hours under those stated test figures.

Wired fast charging also improves. Apple says iPhone 18 Pro can reach around 50% in about 15 minutes with compatible charging, while iPhone 17 Pro is rated for up to 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W or higher adapter.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro share the same listed 150.0 x 71.9 x 8.75 mm dimensions, but the newer phone weighs 211 g versus 204 g. Apple keeps the aluminium unibody and Ceramic Shield construction while refreshing the colours to Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.

Storage now runs from 256GB to 2TB on iPhone 18 Pro, while iPhone 17 Pro tops out at 1TB. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, NFC and second-generation Ultra Wideband on both generations, while iPhone 18 Pro adds Apple's C2 cellular modem.

Apple's India store lists the iPhone 18 Pro from ₹1,64,900 for the 256GB configuration. The 512GB model is listed at ₹1,89,900, 1TB at ₹2,39,900 and 2TB at ₹3,14,900. The larger iPhone 18 Pro Max starts higher, so buyers should make sure they are comparing the 6.3-inch Pro prices rather than the Pro Max prices.

Pre-orders for iPhone 18 Pro open in India at 5:30 PM IST on September 12, with availability beginning September 18.

For an iPhone 17 Pro owner, the display size, resolution and basic 120Hz experience are not major reasons to upgrade. The strongest improvements are the variable-aperture Main camera and manual Pro controls, A20 Pro performance, expanded AI hardware, longer battery life, faster charging, 2TB storage option and C2 modem.

Users who are happy with the iPhone 17 Pro camera and battery can reasonably keep it. Creators, heavy gamers and buyers who value manual photography controls or maximum sustained performance have a clearer case for moving to iPhone 18 Pro.
